The Gallery Today

The Gallery was established in 1981, when a large purpose-built exhibition space, the Regional Gallery, was added to the site. Along with Lewers House, the Regional Gallery is a venue for the presentation of aspects of the permanent collection as well as changing exhibitions of local, national and international art. Selected sculptural works from the collection are located in the garden, which also provides an idyllic setting for outdoor performances and functions.

The Gallery is supported by an active and committed Friends organisation. The majority of the visitors to the Gallery are local or regional, extending from Parramatta to the Blue Mountains, and from a broad range of cultural backgrounds. School groups and students form a significant audience.

The unique nature of the Gallery, with its artistic and architectural heritage, galleries, gardens and collection, forms an educational and recreational resource that is recognised nationally and internationally. A model for the development of many regional galleries in Australia, the Gallery is committed to the highest standards of museum practice in all aspects of its management.
