No Right Turn Arist Statement
The houses I draw are sourced from surrounding streets from suburbs which I have at some stage in my life lived in. I re-visit and explore these areas and sometimes the houses which I have inhabited, and use photographs I capture on these outings as source material for these drawings. They are a personal representation of what I consider to be the typical Australian suburban landscape. With these drawings I try to capture an honest portrayal of life in the suburbs and the strong emotions and attachments that are associated with these scenes and mundane objects. Visually the drawings are suggestive of the past. I recreate contemporary landscapes in the style of old sepia photography to play with the tension of what is current and what is haunting. The drawings are inspired by a mixture of feelings associated with growing up in these places. Contrasting emotions such as nostalgia and regret, and themes like migration, isolation, memories and the idea of home are the motivation behind these artworks.
