Art Appreciation and Visual Literacy for Early Learning Teachers and Primary Teachers

This workshop will include:

In-gallery modelling of a variety of pedagogical approaches to Aboriginal art appreciation for young audiences (3 – 5 years, 5 – 12 years). Course content will be directly applicable to the Visual Arts Syllabus and the Early Years Learning Framework.

By attending this PD session participants will learn how to:

  • Introduce the Aboriginal concepts of Country, Language, Skin and Totem, through discussion and activities based on the selected focus artworks.
  • Increase awareness of Aboriginal culture by engaging students in art appreciation based on Aboriginal artworks.
  • Develop and deliver art appreciation activities based on a sound understanding of a range of pedagogic practices that recognise and respond to a variety of developmental stages and learning styles in order to make learning accessible, relevant and engaging.
  • Encourage student participants to confidently test ideas and express and share opinions in a respectful group context using Aboriginal art as a catalyst to discussion.
  • Lead art appreciation sessions that introduce and apply subject specific vocabulary.
  • Position visual literacy activities as a social practice that engenders shared meaning.
  • Encourage and manage critical responses as well as subjective and imaginative responses.
  • Source ideas from traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art to inform the development of art making activities for students.
