tactile Volunteer Facilitators Call-Out!

Exhibition Dates: 7 April – 20 May 2018

An exciting volunteer opportunity is available at Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest. This opportunity will particularly suit people interested in art and its presentation to audiences. This is a dynamic role with the opportunity to engage visitors and maximise a positive experience for audiences.

On exhibition in Lewers House Gallery at Penrith Regional Gallery will be: artworks intended for touch. Unlike other exhibitions, visitors are invited to experience the sensory nature of the artists’ work. As part of the volunteering experience, facilitators will be asked to guide visitors through the exhibition, presenting the possibilities of the artworks while also protecting them from mistreatment. This is a vital role which will support the key theme of the exhibition and support its ongoing presentation.

Volunteers will be given the opportunity to:
• Be an ambassador for PRG and the larger PPVA, the regions flagship cultural organisation
• Gain an insight into Tactile exhibition themes
• Get a behind the scenes look at working in a gallery
• Be part of the welcoming Gallery team, providing hospitality to gallery visitors
• Have the opportunity to secure a professional reference from PRG
• Invitation to the Opening event
• Participate in a closing exhibition volunteers thank you event

As part of the program we are looking for volunteers to:
• Be available for a minimum of 8 hours across the exhibition period
• Have a Working With Children Check (available online free for volunteers at https://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/working-with-children/working-with-children-check/apply/apply)
• Sign and adhere to a Code of Conduct (Penrith Performing & Visual Arts)
• Be available for a two hour induction and training session on either Saturday 7 April, 9-11am, OR Wednesday 11 April, from 2 – 4pm

As part of the role volunteers will be responsible for the following tasks;
• Hosting the exhibition space and welcoming visitors into the exhibition, as well as interacting with the general public as ambassador for the gallery and the exhibition – inviting visitors to touch works in a considered manner
• Invigilation duties including – being vigilant and mindful of the space and artworks in order to protect the works and interacting with the public to create an exciting but safe environment for people who view the exhibition
• Record accurate exhibition visitor statistics
• Asking visitors survey information questions

Applications close at midnight Sunday 1 April. Successful applicants will be interviewed Wednesday 4 April and notified by Friday 6 April.

The Gallery’s volunteer programs provide professional development opportunities for people interested in working in the arts. Volunteers gain an understanding of the Gallery’s role and function within the community and practical experience in the operation of a regional gallery. Secondary and tertiary art students and interested members of the general public are welcome to apply.

Volunteer experiences at the Gallery can be divided into the following major areas:
• exhibitions
• conservation
• education and workshop programs
• public programs and hospitality
• research
• administration.
