CALL OUT: The Ideal Home Volunteers

Exhibition Dates: 1 December 2018 – 24 March 2019

An exciting volunteer opportunity is available at Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest. This opportunity will particularly suit people interested in art, design and architecture, and is part of the upcoming exhibition The Ideal Home. This is a dynamic role with the opportunity to engage audiences and maximize a positive experience for audiences.

This Summer Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest together with the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, will present the exhibition The Ideal Home accompanied by a series of public programs (1 December 2018 – 24 March 2019). The exhibition and program presents a history of the 20th century Australian home told through household objects, furniture and design classics from the MAAS Collection. These works will be shown alongside contemporary Australian and international artists who have sought to engage with the idea of home and its various themes.

Volunteers will be given the opportunity to:

  • Be an ambassador for PRG and the larger PPVA, the regions flagship cultural organization
  • Gain an insight into The Ideal Home exhibition themes
  • Get a behind the scenes look at working in a gallery
  • Be part of the welcoming Gallery team, providing hospitality to gallery visitors
  • Have the opportunity to secure a professional reference from PRG
  • Invitation to the Opening event

As part of the program we are looking for volunteers to:

  • Be available for a minimum of 8 hours across the exhibition period
  • Have a Working With Children Check (available online free for volunteers, click here)
  • Sign and adhere to a Code of Conduct (Penrith Performing & Visual Arts)
  • Be available for a two hour induction and training session on either Wednesday 28 November from 3 – 5pm, OR Saturday 1 December from 10-12am

As part of the role volunteers will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Hosting the exhibition space and welcoming visitors into the exhibition, as well as interacting with the general public as ambassador for the gallery and the exhibition
  • Invigilation duties including – being vigilant and mindful of the space and artworks in order to protect the works and interacting with the public to create an exciting but safe environment for people who view the exhibition
  • Record accurate exhibition visitor statistics
  • Asking visitors survey information questions

The Gallery’s volunteer programs provide professional development opportunities for people interested in working in the arts. Volunteers gain an understanding of the Gallery’s role and function within the community and practical experience in the operation of a regional gallery. Secondary and tertiary art students and interested members of the general public are welcome to apply.

Volunteer experiences at the Gallery can be divided into the following major areas:
