Teachers
The Gallery offers a variety of professional development opportunities for teachers. Specialised itineraries, flexible timetables and a diverse choice of subject matter and expressive forms cater to a broad spectrum of interests and requirements.
Primary teacher development days focus on developing art-making skills in a particular medium, exploring a range of materials, and looking at best application in the classroom. Development sessions can also focus on using visual art in other areas of the curriculum; for example, as a literacy stimulus, as a practice for developing self-esteem and as a method of communicating narrative.
High School teacher development days offer opportunities to work with contemporary artists, to discover strategic ways to use the Gallery as an educational resource, and to participate in art appreciation, art theory and criticism sessions using the Gallery’s exhibition program. We can also deliver focus sessions on syllabus-specific education kits, which are a valuable classroom resource. The education kits contain colour images, artists’ statements, curatorial essays and practical classroom application suggestions.
